Some births don't let you go. Images, sounds, things someone said. The feeling of having been at someone else's mercy. And then suddenly there's another positive test, and along with the joy, the fear comes back too.
If you recognise yourself in this: you're not alone. And it's not an overreaction that it's on your mind.
What makes a birth distressing
A birth doesn't have to look dramatic from the outside to feel distressing. It's often less about what happened and more about how it felt. Not being asked. Not understanding what was happening. Being left alone. Or being afraid for yourself or your baby.
Your experience matters. Even when others say: “The main thing is that the baby is healthy.”
How Hypnobirthing can support you
Hypnobirthing can help you approach birth again step by step. At your own pace.
- Knowledge instead of powerlessness: You understand what happens during a birth and what options you have. That gives you back a bit of control.
- Tools for difficult moments: Breathing and relaxation help you stay centred, even when fear comes up.
- New inner images: You work consciously with thoughts and images that strengthen you, instead of the ones that frighten you.
- Taking your wishes seriously: You think about what you need this time and learn to communicate it too.
Where the limits are
As important as Hypnobirthing is to me: it doesn't replace therapy. If your last birth weighs very heavily on you, if you have flashbacks, sleep badly or the thought of the next birth paralyses you, please get additional professional support.
Good first points of contact are your midwife, your gynaecologist and organisations such as Schatten & Licht e.V., which specialise in crises around birth. Trauma-sensitive psychotherapy can help you truly process what you went through.
By the way, Hypnobirthing and therapy aren't mutually exclusive. Quite the opposite: the two together can be very valuable.
How I work in situations like this
If you come to me after a distressing birth, we first take time for your story. You don't have to tell me anything you don't want to. But you can. Often just putting it into words helps to sort out what actually happened.
In this situation in particular, I often recommend individual 1:1 support instead of a group class. There we can work very specifically on your topics, without you having to explain yourself in front of others. A 1:1 Session to talk through your birth can also be a good first step.
Frequently asked questions about Hypnobirthing after a difficult birth
Can Hypnobirthing take away my fear of the next birth?
It can help you deal with your fear differently and feel safer. It doesn't have to disappear completely. What matters is that it's no longer in the driver's seat.
Is a group class or 1:1 support better?
After a distressing birth, I often recommend 1:1 support. There's room for your story, and we can work very specifically on whatever is on your mind.
When should I get additional therapeutic help?
If your birth weighs heavily on you in everyday life, if you experience flashbacks or panic, or if you can no longer face the topic. Your midwife or your doctor can point you to other people to contact.
My conclusion
A distressing birth doesn't have to determine how your next one goes. With time, knowledge and support, you can approach birth anew. If you like, let's use a no-obligation get-to-know-you call to see what would do you good right now. You can find more about my formats on my hypnobirthing page.
